The Jumpers When we retuned to the lobby, I finished up my day working with a family, who were having great difficulty with their smaller children. They told us that overnight the children had entirely changed. They were afraid of everything, and every noise. I sat and read to their little girl, while her parents consulted with our mental health staff. The child was only about four and so sweet. She tenaciously clung to me, as she had to her mother. Even the little girl had her story to tell, as I listened to how she had seen "people fly" from the towers. She pulled her born braid into her mouth and sucked on the pink ribbon attached to it. Tears trickled down her face and across her rosy cheeks, as she asked me if the bad man was going to come to her apartment. It broke a piece of my heart to realize what the children had seen, and how frightened they were. I gently kissed her forehead, wiped away her tiny tears, and told her everything would be fine and not to worry. As I continued to read to her, her eyes grew heavy, and she fell asleep on my lap innocently trusting that I had told her the truth. Drawings and text by Jude Patch Guglielmino judepatch@hotmail.com
