The Riot When I arrived at the service center at Ground Zero it was still dark and there were long, long lines down the block. They were the people from Chinatown, and it was a mob scene. We had to shove through the crowd to get into the front door. They pulled at our clothing wanting us to notice them and let them in the building. They had been there since 1:00 a.m. Once in the building we realized the toilets backed up and the entire basement stunk like a septic tank that was long over due for pumping. Having no windows or ventilation it produced a difficult working space. The situation was creating tremendous stress. Clients and workers were growing short-tempered and irritable. The job officer in charge telephoned the police and they responded putting up yellow tapes and saw horses to gain order among the waiting people before we had a full blown riot on our hands. Lined up within the yellow tapes the potential clients waited. The line extended for blocks and I wondered if there was ever going to be an end to my job.
